Justice Lab welcomes open justice review

Justice Lab Director Dr Natalie Byrom has welcomed the Government’s announcement of a “wide-ranging” review to support and strengthen openness, transparency and the accessibility of court and tribunal services in England and Wales.

The review was announced today by Courts Minister, Mr Freer, as part of the Ministry of Justice’s response to the Justice Select Committee’s report on open justice published in November last year.

Dr Byrom gave oral evidence to the committee and Justice Lab’s written evidence called on the Government to take “urgent action” to improve open justice in the court system.

Commenting on the MoJ’s response today, Dr Byrom said:

We welcome the Government’s announcement of a wide-ranging review on open justice. For too long, our court system has been shrouded in mystery, undermining attempts to increase access, efficiency and public confidence.

Crucial to addressing this is to enhance the public and media’s access to reliable data and we look forward to presenting practical proposals to the review that can make increase transparency as part of wider changes to improve the justice system.
